W. Abraham Ltd is 100% family owned operated, with over 84 years of serving the Taranaki communities. In that time, we have performed over 20,000 funerals.
All of our staff are fully qualified in their respective areas with many years of experience between them. (Barrie alone has been directing funerals since the early 1960's.)
Willie Abraham
Founder of W. Abraham Ltd - 1924
In 1924 Willie bought an established joinery factory. Through manufacturing caskets, he became involved in providing funeral services. The first funeral Willie attended required him to pushbike from Stratford to New Plymouth to make the necessary funeral arrangements.
During the early years, Willie redeveloped his joinery factory - at its existing site of 27 Eliot Street, to incorporate a small Chapel. In 1969 a fire destroyed the building and Willie had to rebuild his funeral home. Thankfully, at the time of the fire there was no one in the building.
After many years of serving New Plymouth, and having arranged more than 6 thousand funerals, Willie retired in 1960.
